When it comes to determination, Charles Moyer is demonstrating he’s got what it takes. The 86 year old Lansdale man is one of the newest members of The Becoming Center, Liberty’s health and wellness center for older adults on the campus of Artman in Ambler. He is taking on a fitness routine for the first time in his life.
“I’m up in years and there are more things I can’t do, that I was accustomed to doing before,” Moyer explained. “I have had trouble walking and I don’t know why, but I thought if I get some exercise maybe it could be improved.”
Moyer is battling more than age and decreased mobility. He suffers from chronic kidney disease and undergoes dialysis treatments three times a week. Still, three days a week, when he isn’t in dialysis, you can find him at the Becoming Center working out with the equipment or doing a free swim in the pool.
“Walking was more important to me than I thought,” he said. “Stairs are tough on me. It’s amazing what I’ll do to avoid a set of stairs.”
A career carpenter retired for more than 20 years, Moyer met with Becoming Center Exercise Physiologist Shelley Ashby for an initial physical evaluation and to discuss fitness goals.
“I’d like to be able to walk around the entire length of the Montgomery Mall without stopping and resting,” Moyer said. He also wants to improve his balance and build upper body strength, which Ashby said is critical for that level of walking.
Moyer’s wife and adult children are thrilled that he is getting some exercise these days, he said. In fact, two of his sons personally visited the Becoming Center to see how their father has been spending his free time. Moyer is already noticing improvement in his strength and balance and his hard work is inspiring the staff and other members at the Becoming Center.
“Mr. Moyer has a tenacious spirit,” Ashby said. “He is doing what it takes to work towards his goal.”
