Betsy and Ted Taylor are no strangers to change. In nearly 60 years of marriage, the Taylors have lived in five different locations, and in 14 different houses. Betsy says, “Our family mantra is ‘To change is to grow and to grow is to change.’”
After visiting many Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) across the eastern United States, Ted remembers their daughter, who resides in State College and is employed by Penn State University, saying, “You can’t make a decision until you look at the Village.” The rest is history- they looked and they bought.
Since moving to The Village at Penn State (VPS) in 2011, Ted and Betsy have continued an active and involved lifestyle. Prior to retirement, Ted was the Chairman and CEO of the Kresge Foundation and former Board member of both the National Trust for Historic Preservation and American Farmland Trust. Like many retirees today, the Taylors sought intellectual and cultural stimulation in a setting that offers lifelong learning. VPS, a University-Based Retirement Community (UBRC), located on property leased from Penn State University, offers residents a wide variety of education and volunteer opportunities and participation in university classes and cultural events.
In any given month, VPS residents enjoy concerts, operas and plays, athletic events and classes offered by professors from the University. In addition, there are many resident led clubs and social activities. The Taylors live by a quote they once read, “Keep learning, keep challenging yourself, and enjoy the ride.” Betsy says, “We are enjoying the ride.”
