There is an African proverb which suggests, “If you want to go quickly, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.” Over the past several months, Lutheran Children and Family Service (LCFS) has invited our closest friends and supporters to join us in a matching grant opportunity to benefit our refugee resettlement program. Now at the end of the match period, we are excited to announce that we have indeed gone far – together – and exceeded our initial goal!
Since December, LCFS has received contributions totaling $10,800 for the refugee resettlement program. As a result, our partner, Thrivent Financial, will provide an additional $5,000 to support the program – and further expand the impact of your gift.
We are grateful for your generous contributions, which will provide direct assistance for a refugee family served by LCFS in Philadelphia, Lancaster or Allentown. In 2014, LCFS expects to serve approximately 60 refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC.) Many are ethnic minorities who have been forced to flee to the neighboring countries of Uganda and Rwanda, and are now awaiting the opportunity to start a new life in the United States. A staggering 53% of those being processed for resettlement are under 18 years of age.
Thanks to your partnership and the generosity of Thrivent Financial we are making a vital difference in the lives of these newcomers. These funds will help to provide the critical resources needed for LCFS to continue offering hope and opportunity to hundreds of vulnerable refugees each year.
