Residents of The Village at Penn State, Paul and JoAnn, enjoy the convenience of a worry-free lifestyle with plentiful opportunities for fulfillment and joy. Moving to their luxury cottage five years ago, the couple has enjoyed having a sense of community with friends nearby and lots of university-based events to attend.

Prior to living in their cottage at The Village, Paul and JoAnn lived in a single-family home in the State College area for many years. “When you’re retired, there’s still a lot of work to be done with cooking and cleaning and taking care of everything around the house. That’s one factor that really motivated us to move,” says Paul.

At The Village, everything is taken care of for you including cooking, cleaning, and maintenance. It feels great to be free from the stress and anxiety of having to hire people to fix things when something goes wrong.

Free from the stresses of maintenance and cooking, Paul and JoAnn have been especially thrilled with The Village’s five-star dining experience. With Executive Chef, Matt Lambert, and the dining team consistently innovating new menus with fresh, local ingredients, they say the food is fantastic.

“The meals here are excellent. And it’s great that you can dine with other residents. Or if you just want to eat alone, you can have a table for yourself as well,” JoAnn describes. “There’s also the Bistro with alternative menus when you want to grab lunch or dinner,” Paul adds referring to The Village’s additional dining option with small plate menu items and wood-fired pizzas.

While Paul and JoAnn enjoy the community’s delicious cuisine, another factor that motivated their move, was having access to a continuum of care for their future. “We were 70 when we moved here,” JoAnn recalls. “Originally, when we were looking to downsize we thought of moving to a 55+ community, but when we considered potentially needing care within 10 years, having a community with care available became important,” she says.

Finding comfort in The Village’s compassionate care and numerous amenities, Paul and JoAnn were also happy with the community’s option to move to a luxury cottage. “The cottage worked out well for us. We really like the whole layout and floorplan, and the privacy. Plus the two car garage is great,” says Paul.

Making Friends and Getting Involved

As Paul and JoAnn have made themselves comfortable in their cottage throughout the years, they quickly discovered that at The Village, there are plentiful opportunities for making friends and having fun. “Any event or activity that you attend here, you can meet friends. And you can enjoy the programs you attend together,” JoAnn reflects. JoAnn is a part of The Village’s Book Club and Knitting Club and she has been Secretary of the community’s Resident Council for three years.

“We also have very easy access to events at Penn State University,” JoAnn adds, referring to the community’s university-based connection. “The Village’s transportation takes you there so you don’t have to worry about parking and the team here always makes you aware of what’s happening on campus,” says Paul.

A Kind and Caring Team

The staff here are wonderful, especially maintenance and housekeeping. They always have a smile on their faces, and they will bend over backwards to help you with whatever you need.

Paul and JoAnn are familiar with The Village’s caring team, as they see them go above and beyond to ensure an outstanding living experience. “Our team members care for residents like family,” says Executive Director of The Village at Penn State, Ellen Corbin. “We are highly focused on customer service across every department and we do everything we can to make sure our residents are happy,” Ellen adds.

With a caring team and friendly residents by their side, Paul and JoAnn look forward to a fulfilling retirement that is free from the stresses of their previous home. As they continue to stay involved in all that The Village has to offer, the continuum of care brings them comfort in knowing that The Village will always be their happy home.
